Group therapy can help you feel more connected, less isolated, and amplify your results!

Here are three reasons why group therapy helps you improve your mental health, especially for teenagers:

REASON 1: MORE CONNECTED

Group therapy offers an experience where you can connect with other people who are all going through similar life circumstances and help each other out.

 

Teens are going through a time in their lives when they are separating from their family of origin (parents, siblings, basically their nuclear family). We call this individuation.  They are learning how to create their own adult life separate from their families. This is totally normal. 

 

It can be hard to know how to connect with others who understand what you're going through. Group therapy can help you connect with others, and with yourself, by sharing your own experiences to help others.

REASON 2: LESS ISOLATED

When we are stressed out, we can become emotional. When we become emotional, we may get told that we're being “crazy” (in a negative way, not a fun way,) and that can feed negative thoughts and energy towards ourselves.

 

When you connect with others in group therapy, you start to realize, "Oh, this doesn't just happen to me. Other people have this happen too.

It can feel really lonely when going through so many changes and circumstances that are out of our control. When we feel bad about ourselves, we tend to isolate ourselves from others.

 

We can't imagine that if we don't feel good about ourselves, how could others appreciate and feel good about us.  By learning from each other, you can learn new perspectives and ways of overcoming your challenges.

REASON 3: AMPLIFY YOUR RESULTS

When you participate in a group therapy program, you are learning, growing, and internalizing your experiences, with others, in vivo. 

Hearing from other people's perspectives and experiences allows you to get several other people's viewpoints, in addition to the therapist’s point of view. 

 

This can really expand your perspective and thinking beyond your own experience.

It may even help solve problems in new and creative ways.
