HOW MUCH!? The COSTS of Therapy for Teens

You asked: "I've been wondering how much therapy for teens costs and if your insurance can cover the cost."

I love this question because it doesn't assume that the cost of therapy is only financial.

There are actually 4 different costs of Therapy for Teens,

and in this video post, I’m going to spill the tea on all of them.

If you prefer to read, here’s what you need to know about the costs of therapy for teens:

TIME

Your time is a valuable, precious commodity. And with teenagers, your life is busy!

A lot of your time is already obligated to things like:

👩‍💻 homework

🧹 chores

😴 getting enough sleep

👭 keeping up with friends

Anyone else feeling crunched for time or time-challenged? 🙋‍♀️

Ask yourself: Do you have the time in your schedule to show up for one hour a week to get started? That is usually the minimum commitment a therapist will ask from you upfront.

If you don't have that weekly availability, start looking at your calendar and schedule to see where you could potentially free up some of that time.

ENERGY

Therapy is an emotional, active process. It takes a certain level of motivation and energy to work on yourself and the skills you learn in therapy.

Whenever you are trying or starting something new, it takes a little more effort and energy at first.

Think of a child learning to walk. They are deliberate most of the time in how they step one foot in front of the other. They may be wobbly, maybe making that concentrated face trying so hard to stay standing. That is from working with new thinking and muscle groups.

COMMITMENT

If you are going to start the therapy process, and want to see the results you desire, then you really have to stay committed to the process.

Committing to the therapy process means:

🛋 keeping your scheduled appointments

🤔 making an effort to work on the things outside the therapy room that you are working on inside it.

🤯 letting your therapist know what's working and not working(we don't keep recreating the same wheel thinking that you're getting benefit out of it.)

Commitment means showing up with an open heart and a willing mind.

If you're able to do that, then you are ready for therapy.

FINANCIAL

Mental health therapy is a health service, which means that in exchange for providing this treatment, you do financially compensate the therapist.

Your therapist continues to invest a lot of their own time, money, and energy to obtain the knowledge and skills to be a good, ethical therapist, AND be able to practice with others.

When you make sure the therapist is taken care of, then they can focus on taking care of you and your mental health needs with ease.

Sometimes insurance can cover some or all of the financial costs of therapy. Stay tuned, because I'll be delving more into how that works in next week's video post.
