Decrease Your Teen's Negativity

"We are like magnets - like attract like. You become AND attract what you think." ~ Rhonda Byrne, The Secret

If you haven't heard of, or read The Secret, it is basically a book about the Law of Attraction. That concept is described perfectly in the quote above. The idea that how we think affects the way we feel and behave is rampant throughout Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)These are two of my favorite therapy models with good reason- I've seen time and time again how their concepts, skills, and practice has helped client after client feel better.

The Problem

We all know the adage "misery loves company." The reason this is popular is because it is so true! When we are already feeling negative, uncomfortable, or less confident than we'd like to feel, we tend to stay that way. It is easy to go down what I call the "black hole" if we stay in this mindset.

Teens look to their peer group to check in about how they should act, think, and feel. As we already know, the teen years can be horribly uncomfortable and confusing so it's easy to get into a negative mindset and stay there.

The Solution

Start noticing what's already working.

It's easy to get caught up in what's going wrong. When you notice the things that are going well or already working for your teen it helps them feed on that positive energy. Over time, your focus on what is working will help your teen's negativity.

Plus, when you share with your teen the things are going well and working well for them, they'll start to be primed to look for those things too! When we intentionally look for the good, we start noticing more good, and this makes everyone feel awesome!
