Self-soothing strategies are important when you are in a stressful situation or need a moment to calm down.

They can help you take your mind off of what is affecting you and help you evaluate the situation in a more calm manner.

Here are the 6 Ways Teens Can Calm Their Self-Harm Urges using Dialectical Behavior Therapy’s (DBT) Self-Soothing strategies:

  1. Sight

  2. Smell

  3. Taste

  4. Sound

  5. Physical Touch

  6. Movement

For example, a self-soothing strategy for sound can be listening to instrumental music. The more strategies you can come up with, the better off you will be in improving your mood when you are experiencing distress.

Take time to indulge in your own self-soothing strategy this week.
