How you can go BACK to Therapy again...

I LOVE answering YOUR Questions!

"I haven't talked to my therapist since the beginning of quarantine. Now the thought of telling her I need her again makes me anxious. What can I do?"

If you prefer to read, here’s what you need to know about how you can go BACK to Therapy again:

Mental health therapists want our clients to feel better and more secure and confident in themselves.

We don't want you to be dependent or over-reliant on therapy.

The lifespan of humans is pretty long, which leaves an opportunity for new stressors and anxiety to pop up that could reactivate an old wound.

STAY CURIOUS

Ask yourself why you might be feeling anxious about returning to therapy?

Is there any benefit or guidance that your anxiety is trying to give you?

Remember, anxiety is a totally normal response to any overwhelming change or stress.

It can feel a little awkward re-engaging with something that you thought that you had already completed.

I think we can all agree, 2020 has been a wild, rocky year:

✔️A global pandemic

✔️COVID-19

✔️different parts of the world on fire,

✔️here in America a huge social movement, Black Lives Matter, has brought attention to the many racial and social injustices that have been here for a long time.

All of that brings up really strong emotions, not just for us, but for other people around us, too.

LIFE HAPPENS

We don't expect you to be 100% perfect 100% of the time.

If you found working with your therapist helpful in the past, most of us would be happy to work with you again.

We call that established relationship with your previous therapist a therapeutic alliance.

Working with the same therapist again is great because they already know a bit of your history. They've walked alongside part of your life already.

PLUS, if you've already successfully completed therapy with a therapist, you already know that it's possible again.

I am not sure why returning to therapy in and of itself gets a bad rep because, with other health conditions, we go back to the same specialist or doctor all the time.

Depending on where the injury or concern is occurring, you might be able to return to that same doctor, or they might have to refer you to somebody more specialized in that area.

The same is true with mental health therapy.

WE WANT TO HELP YOU

We know that asking for help is hard, and it's why we do what we do.

If you are experiencing a resurgence of a problem, or it's manifesting in a new manner, then your previous therapist may be able to help you out.

Your therapist may also decide with you that you could benefit from somebody who's more specialized in what you're going through.
