THE MYTH OF MOTIVATION

There's this myth that motivation will just inspire and strike you at any moment. Because of this myth, you might believe you have to wait for divine inspiration or momentum to just appear and that is how you get motivated.

FALSE! That is not how motivation works.

Waiting around for motivation to just appear doesn't work.

When you wait around for motivation to appear, that ends up leading to procrastination and then you get overwhelmed by everything you have to do.

→ This leads to you getting so stressed out that then you get a burst of energy to hustle and get your to-do list done.

→  Once it's complete, you get hit with a major feeling of relief- whew! you did it!

→  However, since you just spent so much energy getting all worked up, you usually end up burnt out and exhausted which leads you to avoid the next task or big assignment you have coming up.

→  And then you restart that cycle all over again.

Maybe that works for you but that's probably not great for your stress, your emotions and your physical responses to stress.

WHAT IS FLOW?

So the reason why motivation works so well is that it helps us get into a state of flow. Flow is the idea of being in the zone.

Have you ever just been working on a paper and you're like, "man, it's all just clicking, it's all working, it's all coming together, man, if I could have this all the time, I would get all my assignments done, right?" That is flow!

Flow helps you stay motivated after you've already achieved motivation.

It helps you sustain the energy and focus that you need to keep going to accomplishment.

It can feel really, really great when you get into a state of flow and you are just feeling yourself. It makes you want to keep doing what it is that you're doing which is why flow is so important to making motivation work for you.

HERE’S THE SECRET TO MOTIVATION:

ACTION

The secret to getting motivated when you just don't care is taking action. Yeah, waiting around ain't gonna cut it. You actually got to take some action to get and stay motivated.

Now, you're probably sitting there like, "Mallory, obviously, if I had motivation then I could take action, I can't take action without motivation."

Wrong, we take action all the time without motivation.

WANT TO REMEMBER THESE TIPS? DON’T FORGET TO PIN IT!

What happens is once you start taking action, even if it's a small step like opening up your laptop to look at the assignments that you have to do, or writing down your to-do list, you've already started to initiate that state of flow.

It can take about 20 minutes to get into a flow state so you've got to keep taking action for a short period of time in order to initiate that flow state, which is what we often call motivation.
