What if I told you there’s an easy 4-step strategy that can help you stand up for yourself with others WHILE still feeling good about yourself?
Dialectical Behavior Therapy maps this out in their Interpersonal Effectiveness module which is all about improving your relationships through healthier communication strategies.
For this skillset, you’ll use the acronym FAST to help you remember these strategies:
Fair
be fair to yourself and the other person. Consider their point of view, while still sharing yours.
Apologies
don’t over- or under-apologize.
Stick to your values
your values will never steer you wrong if you stay true and aligned to them. Not sure if you’re making the right decision? Try playing the intuition game to see if you’re choice is aligned here: mallorygrimste.com/counseling-blog/intuitiongame
Tell the truth
don’t lie, exaggerate or make things up.
